Airalo
eSIMeSIM for 200+ countries, activated in 5 minutes
Pros
- Coverage in 200+ countries, often with regional packages
- Activation via QR code in 5 minutes, without visiting a store
- Significantly cheaper than roaming from Czech operators
- No hidden fees or automatic renewal
- Option to buy more data in the app if insufficient
Cons
- Requires an eSIM-enabled phone (older models are out of luck)
- Most packages are data-only, without a number for calls
- In some countries, a local SIM card is cheaper for longer stays
What is Airalo?
Airalo is the largest global marketplace for eSIM cards. Instead of hunting for a local SIM card at the airport, you can buy a data package for 200+ countries in the app in a few minutes and activate it by scanning a QR code.
Why I use it
When I arrive in a new country, I don't want to deal with SIM card shops or expensive roaming from my Czech operator. I install Airalo at home on Wi-Fi, choose a package, and immediately have data upon arrival - no queues, no paperwork.
How it works
- Download the Airalo app (iOS/Android)
- Select a country or regional package (e.g., Eurolink for Europe)
- Pay by card or Apple/Google Pay
- Scan the QR code and activate the eSIM in your phone settings
- Upon arrival, turn on data roaming on your new eSIM and you're good to go
Who is it ideal for
- Travelers across multiple countries - regional packages cover an entire continent
- Short trips (3-14 days) - cheaper than Czech roaming, no commitments
- Digital nomads - combine with a local SIM card for longer stays
- People who don't want to bother - everything from the app, no plastic
Usage tips
- Buy eSIM at home on Wi-Fi - installation abroad on expensive data is painful
- Regional packages (Eurolink, Asialink) are more advantageous than multiple country packages if you're traveling to several countries
- Verify that your phone supports eSIM (iPhone XS+, most flagship Androids from 2020)
- Most packages are data-only - for calls, use WhatsApp, Signal, or iMessage
My verdict
Airalo is my number one for mobile data abroad. In Japan, I paid ~$22 for 8 GB / 30 days instead of thousands for roaming. Install at home, activate upon arrival, and have peace of mind.
