    About the brand

MSR - Mountain Safety Research was founded in 1969 in Seattle as a direct response by founding engineer and mountaineer Larry Penberthy to the dangerous mountaineering equipment of his time. Larry distributed his own MSR Newsletter, in which he tested ice axes, helmets, and carabiners and published their weaknesses - it was one of the first forms of consumer advocacy in the outdoor industry. The pressure he put on manufacturers pushed safety standards decades ahead.

The newsletter quickly became a workshop, and the workshop a brand. MSR began producing its own improved ice axes, avalanche probes, and helmets, which enforced higher standards. When MSR introduced its first stove, the Model 9, in 1973, it laid the foundation for what it is best known for today - liquid fuel stoves for extreme conditions.

In 1981, MSR became part of Seattle-based Cascade Designs (the parent company for Therm-a-Rest, Platypus, and SealLine). The merger meant access to advanced manufacturing technology, but the key DNA - an engineering-first approach and its own Seattle laboratory - remained intact.

In 1982, the iconic WhisperLite stove arrived - a lightweight, field-maintainable liquid fuel stove that mountaineers still pack on all continents today. This was followed by MiniWorks and WaterWorks water filters in the 1990s, the ultralight Hubba tent (2004) and Hubba Hubba, which redefined the trekking tent, and in 2015, the revolutionary Guardian Purifier - the first field filter to remove viruses without chemicals and without replaceable cartridges.

Today, MSR designs and develops in its Materials & Structures Lab in Seattle, where it tests tents in a snow chamber, stoves in a low-pressure chamber simulating 7,000 m, and filters against thousands of liters of contaminated water. It is largely manufactured directly in Seattle - a rarity in the outdoor industry today.

Product range: liquid and gas stoves (WhisperLite, PocketRocket, Reactor), expedition tents (Hubba Hubba, Access, Remote), water filters and purifiers (MiniWorks, Guardian, TrailShot), snowshoes (Lightning Ascent, Evo), and accessories for the cooking system.

    Sustainability

MSR is one of the few large outdoor brands that still manufactures a significant portion of its portfolio in its own factory in Seattle. Local production means direct control over emissions, waste, and working conditions - without a subcontracting chain across half the planet.

    Specific commitments:

    • Repair & rebuild program - spare parts for stoves (pumps, jets, gaskets), filters (cartridges, ceramic inserts), and tents (arches, poles, mesh). MSR explicitly designs products to be repairable, not disposable.
    • Guardian Purifier - eliminates plastic bottles on expeditions and humanitarian missions (the brand collaborates with organizations like Wine to Water).
    • bluesign®-certified textiles in the tent line and reduction of PFAS chemicals in impregnations.
    • Recyclable and reduced packaging - Cascade Designs is committed to reducing plastic content in packaging and printed manuals.
    • Carbon footprint disclosure - the parent group Cascade Designs has published carbon footprint reports since 2021 and is progressively reducing its manufacturing emissions.

In the outdoor segment, where greenwashing is common, MSR is among the brands that can back up sustainability with concrete steps - primarily by ensuring products last two decades and can be repaired.

    Mission & values

    "Engineer solutions for serious adventurers."

MSR's mission is to design equipment that works when it matters. Every product undergoes testing in its own Seattle laboratory - a snow chamber, a low-pressure chamber for stoves, and a series of field service tests. The brand's philosophy is based on three pillars:

    • Engineering, not marketing. Products are born in the lab, not an advertising agency.
    • Field repairability. The WhisperLite can be disassembled and cleaned with a spoon at base camp - that's no accident.
    • Safety first. The brand's genetic code comes from Penberthy's newsletter - user safety takes precedence over price and weight.
