About the brand
Altra was founded in 2009 in Logan, Utah, around a simple idea most running brands ignored: the human foot has a different shape than the shoe. High-school friends Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead grew up around Harper's family running store, Runner's Corner, where Golden saw the same injuries return again and again - many of them tied to elevated heels and tapered toe boxes of conventional trainers. Years before founding the brand, Harper experimented at home: he would put regular running shoes into his parents' toaster oven, wait until the glue softened, then level the heel and widen the forefoot. From that prototype came the philosophy the brand now sells worldwide: FootShape™ toe box (a wide, anatomically shaped front) and Balanced Cushioning™ (heel and forefoot at the same height - known as zero drop). The first commercial models launched in 2011; in 2018, VF Corporation (The North Face, Vans, Timberland) acquired Altra, turning it from a niche running pick into one of the fastest-growing brands in VF's outdoor portfolio. The flagship Lone Peak trail model has helped redefine ultrarunning and long-distance hiking (from the PCT to the AT) over the past decade. In 2023, Altra dropped the strict "everything must be zero drop" rule and started offering small-drop options to broaden its audience - but the foot-shaped philosophy stays.
Sustainability
Altra sits within VF Corporation and shares its targets: cut scope 1 and 2 emissions 55 % by 2030 and shift core materials (leather, cotton, polyester, rubber) toward regenerative, recycled or bio-based sources. Altra has expanded recycled polyester in uppers and released models with certified bio-based midsoles. Sustainability is not the brand's headline story the way it is for some peers - the main narrative remains foot shape and running performance.
Mission & values
Give shoes back the job they owe the foot - room for toes, a level platform, and cushioning that helps instead of harming. Build shoes for the actual shape of a foot, not for an idealized last.
