The green owl threatening you in notifications. Memes about Duo's threats if you skip a lesson. For millions of people, it's a daily routine like coffee. Duolingo has become synonymous with mobile language learning over the last 10 years - and has a surprisingly interesting history behind it.

From reCAPTCHA to the Green Owl

Duolingo's story begins in 2009 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Professor Luis von Ahn - a Guatemalan computer scientist who previously invented CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA (yes, those pictures with buses) - was looking for a way to make language learning freely available to everyone.

Together with his student Severin Hacker, they came up with an idea: what if we could teach users a language while also using their translations to translate the web? This led to a beta version in November 2011, with the official launch following in June 2012.

The original monetization model (crowdsourced translations) ultimately didn't last, but the app itself exploded. In July 2021, Duolingo successfully went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker DUOL with a valuation of over $6 billion.

    Why Does It Work?

Duolingo won the battle with competitors (Babbel, Rosetta Stone) with a simple recipe: gamification + habit.

    • Short lessons (5-10 minutes) - fit into public transport, queues, doctor's waiting rooms
    • Daily streak - psychologically compels users to return daily
    • Hearts and leaderboards - turn learning into a game
    • Notifications - Duo knows how to make itself known
    • AI personalization - since 2023, GPT-4 generates tailored exercises

The result? Over 100 million active users monthly across 40+ languages.

    Super Duolingo - Paid Plan

The free version is excellent but has two limitations: ads and limited hearts (after five mistakes, you have to wait hours for them to recharge). Super Duolingo (~190 CZK/month) removes these barriers and adds:

    • No ads
    • Unlimited hearts - make as many mistakes as you want
    • Advanced AI exercises (Roleplay, Explain my answer)
    • Offline mode for lessons on a plane

For people who want to learn daily and seriously, it's a no-brainer.

💚 How to Get Super Duolingo for Free with Revolut

And here's a tip few people know: Revolut Premium, Metal, or Ultra users get Super Duolingo included in their membership.

As part of the perks for higher plans, Revolut covers the Super Duolingo subscription - just activate it directly in the Revolut app in the Lifestyle → Perks section. If you're already paying for Revolut Premium for other benefits (travel insurance, saved fees for foreign payments), you get Duolingo as a free bonus.

The math is simple: Revolut Premium costs about 199 CZK/month, Super Duolingo alone 190 CZK/month. Premium basically only costs you an extra 9 CZK, and you get all the other travel benefits.

    Conclusion

Duolingo is not a perfect tool for advanced language learners, and it will never explain grammar like a teacher. But as a daily routine for building a habit and as a complement to travel, it's absolutely unbeatable. Five minutes on the subway daily over a year will do more than three hours on a Monday evening that you won't even go to anyway.

And if you have Revolut Premium or higher, there's no reason not to try the Super version - you get it included.
